Research at the Department

Since it was established in 1957, the Department of Medicine has always played a significant role in research on the St Vincent's Hospital campus.

The unifying theme of our current research is metabolic medicine with a focus on diabetes and its links with kidney and cardiovascular disease. To address key questions in this field, the Department of Medicine undertakes research in pre-clinical, clinical and population science, and our research into diabetes, kidney and heart disease has achieved a high level of recognition nationally and internationally.

The ultimate goal for our research is to improve the treatment of human disease. As a clinical department of the University of Melbourne, we ensure that our research is driven by clinically relevant questions and that it is designed to discover better therapies and how to apply them in clinical practice.

The Department also actively promotes a broader range of research in the hospital setting by supporting research in affiliated St Vincent's Hospital departments, including Rheumatology, Haematology, Endocrinology, Clinical Neurosciences, Nephrology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Clinical Pharmacology and Cardiology.

Please see our Department Profile for further information on our staff and innovative research.
