About the Department of Medicine

The University Department of Medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne is a Clinical Department of the University of Melbourne, but overlaps and interacts in many ways with Departments of St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. Since it was established in 1957, the Department of Medicine has always played significant roles in research, teaching and patient care on the St. Vincent's Hospital campus.

It is largely through the breadth of our activities, all with a focus on improving the treatment of human disease now and in the future, that we can be distinguished from Research Institutes, Hospital Departments and non-clinical University Departments.

At a clinical level, the Department of Medicine makes a major contribution to the areas of General Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Haematology, Gastroenterology and Clinical Pharmacology and closely interacts with many other Clinical Departments.

Our research into diabetes, kidney and heart disease has achieved a high level of recognition nationally and internationally. Our approach to the study of these diseases ranges from laboratory research at a molecular and cellular level to clinical research with patients and epidemiological surveys.

Teaching has a high priority for the Department, as we take very seriously our responsibility to train the next generation of clinicians and scientists, who represent the future of medical practice and research.

The Department of Medicine has outstanding academic and general staff, bringing a range of clinical, research, teaching and administrative skills. Respect for each other's abilities and willingness to work together as a team characterise our approach and ensure that we maintain the highest standards in teaching, research and patient care.
